Graduate Apprentice PCB Design Engineer - Edinburgh

Job Description

To develop skills and knowledge to carry out all aspects of PCB Design including library support and power delivery network analysis and simulation of the whole design. Provision of the PCB with external manufacturing and assembly suppliers.

  • Completion of a 4 year programme based on the BEng (Hons) Graduate Apprenticeship in Engineering: Design and Manufacture (Electronics). Advanced entry to Year 2 is possible with more advanced prior learning or experience.

  • Year 1 – Study provides a solid grounding in the core disciplines of Engineering which allows learners to make an informed choice of the subsequent options. On the job training.

  • Years 2, 3 & 4 - Continuation of core skills development; Advanced key skills training; Learn key engineering processes; Strategic placements within the company; Supplier visits to enhance knowledge; Industry recognised certification programme (IPC CID / PCEDP); Completion of the BEng (Hons) Graduate Apprenticeship in Engineering: Design and Manufacture (Electronics).

The Role

  • Work closely with experienced PCB Design Engineers to understand PCB library / schematic entry support and layout creation using Renesas created processes to drive the Altium CAD tool set.

  • Various PCB technologies including PTH, SMT, Blind & Buried Vias as well as HDI technology. Complexity is up to 16 layers any-layer stackup structures.

  • Work closely with Design Engineers to understand PCB level Simulation techniques

  • Acquire skills to interface with internal customers (schematics engineers), drive layout review meetings, implement remarks and release the design after achieving consensus from all stakeholders.

  • Generate production files for layout designs, clear DRC errors, check BOM availability in distributors using Renesas specific tools or external websites.

  • Manage PCB fabrication and PCB assembly jobs by contacting relevant suppliers, raising purchase orders, answering all technical questions and tracking deliveries.

  • Diligently support internal design, layout, release and manufacturing processes including updating our internal tracking system (JIRA).

  • Support all PCB Library services including library part creation / validation.

  • Support methodology activities and quality improvements.

  • You will demonstrate a real enthusiasm for Engineering, including motivation to learn the key practical skills required to work within a professional engineering environment and show supportive qualities when working in a team environment.

  • You must also be determined and willing to commit to successfully completing further education and professional industry courses

  • Quality of PCB layout, simulations, library parts.

  • Adherence to the committed schedule. Timely delivery of fully assembled PCBAs to internal customer.

  • Ability to provide status information on all assigned and ongoing jobs on short notice.

Your Profile

Year 1 – 96 SCQF credits at level 6 or Minimum 106 UCAS points, for example:

  • SQA Highers at BBBB including Mathematics, plus Physics or similar;

  • A-Levels at BBC including Mathematics, plus Physics or similar;

  • SQA HNC in an engineering discipline (or a suitable Modern/Technical Apprenticeship) with Engineering Mathematics 1 & 2 (or equivalent).

  • Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering in conjunction with SQA Highers at BBB* including Mathematics.

Year 2 – 96 SCQF credits at level 7, for example:

  • SQA Advanced Highers at BBB including Mathematics, plus Physics or similar;

  • A-Levels at ABB including Mathematics, plus Physics or similar;

  • SQA HND in an engineering discipline (or a suitable Modern/Technical Apprenticeship) with Engineering Mathematics 1, 2 & 3 (or equivalent).

An active interest in Electronic Engineering and how things work. An ability to explain complex technical things in a way that helps people of all technical capabilities to understand.
